Longan, the Dragon Eye

Covered by a brown shell, the Longan was once the luxury fruit of royalty. The fruit surrounds a brown seed which resembles an eye, thus the “dragon eye” name. Longan’s texture is similar to a peeled grape, while the flavor is wonderfully sweet and aromatic. A close relative of the lychee, Longan is one of the most prized fruits of Asia.

Just peel fresh Longan and enjoy—discard the seed and peel. Some people say the flavor resembles a honeydew melon. You may notice a soft floral aroma, somewhat like a gardenia. Serving suggestions

Peel, remove the seed and add the flesh to your chosen dish. Longan is best eaten raw as a snack or added to fruit salads. It can also be very lightly simmered in a spiced lemon syrup and chilled to accompany ice cream or coconut rice pudding. Try replacing pitted cherries with Longan in dessert soups, smoothies, fruit salads, cocktails and sweet-and-sour dishes.

Keeping your Longan fresh

To store, keep refrigerated. Freeze fruit in an airtight container for longer storage. Thaw just before using but leave fruit slightly frozen for the best texture.

Your order includes four+ pounds of longan packed into two clamshells and hand-packed into a beautiful Dragonberry gift box. Orders placed from February 10 through March 9 will be shipped longan in mid-March as the first fruit in a 3, 6 or 12 month fruit program.
